You say avocado, I say delicious. Avocados used to be pretty difficult to find ripe in grocery stores, but not anymore. Just about every store now carries them year-round. Here are some tips for picking out the best avocados:
- Exterior should be free of dents, bruises, and scratches.
- Soft, but not too soft when you squeeze it (comparable to an orange).
- It should feel heavy for it’s size.
On my trip to California last December, I had lunch in downtown Sonoma where I got this amazing sandwich. It’s fantastic and you should try it. Dice some red onion and add it to goat cheese. Mix it until it becomes a spreadable paste (not too runny). Lather that on wheat bread, top with arugula and avocado slices. The tanginess of the goat cheese combined with the sweetness of the avocado really accentuates the freshness of the fruit. Enjoy.
